Little Free Libraries

Jasper County First Steps is proud to be a Stewart Partner of 14 Little Free Libraries (LFL) around Jasper County! Our vision for sponsoring LFLs is to create literacy-rich environments in unexpected places by placing free book-sharing libraries in public places throughout our county.

We would like to thank our generous literacy supporters through whose efforts we are able to provide these beautiful and libraries in our communities. Our hand-built libraries were built by the Sun City Wood Workers Guild and decorated by Sun City All About Art Club. A key supporting in maintaining a supply of reading material for the library is the Sun City Book Exchange Club. We also thank all our literacy partners for hosting LFL on their property thereby reducing book deserts in our communities by providing access to quality literacy material where people gather.

LFL is a book-sharing initiative where persons are encouraged to "take-a-book, give-a-book". Share the gift of reading by donating reading material to a Little Free Library in your community...

Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization that inspires a love of reading, builds community, and sparks creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges around the world.

Through Little Free Libraries, millions of books are exchanged each year, profoundly increasing access to books for readers of all ages and backgrounds.
       Why Does Book Access Matter?
One of the most successful ways to improve the reading achievement of children is to increase their access to books, especially at home (McGill-Franzen & Allington, 2009). But according to the U.S. Department of Education, up to 61% of low-income families do not have any books for their kids at home. Little Free Libraries play an essential role by providing 24/7 access to books (and encouraging a love of reading!) in areas where books are scarce.
